I am trying to run Windows backup to my external USB 3.0 Toshiba drive, but the backup keeps failing when almost complete. I have never had this problem before with this drive. The drive appears to be fine; I ran check disk and no errors were found. I just keep getting an error from the backup program stating there is either a problem with the source or destination. Thoughts?

You ran check disk on both the laptop and the external drive?

Don't know if you still have this problem. It seems to be quite common with USB 3.0 drives and so far no-one has come up with a reason.
It may possibly be due to some obscure timing problem.

I was getting backup failures almost every time with my WD external USB 3.0 drive. After many months of searching, there was no fix but I did find a workaround.

I connected my external drive to my PC via a USB 3.0 hub. You can get them for under £10. Since then I have not had a single backup failure.

I had repeated windows 7 64 bit backup failure about 12 months ago. I had 4 external backups and they all ended up being corrupted. I contacted MS and they could not identify the problem so I had to pay over £100 for a maintenance contract before they would help me. they did a complete re-install of windows for me and wiped out all my programs & drivers during this process. so I had to pay again (over £100 to Sony) to get all my drivers back. 2 weeks later I managed to get fully up & running with all my lost programs on my machine - with 4 good backups in reserve. I used to run defragmenter & check disc on a regular basis but when I had my problems sorted problems I stopped using these utilities and for over 12 months I have not had any backup failure problems - until last week - I ran defragmenter and hey presto I got the old backup failure problem back again. I did a re-image from one of my recent backups and my backup failure problem ceased to exist. so I will never defragment my hard drive again. this problem must effect a lot of windows users with backup failure and I ask the question WHY HAVE MS NOT FIXED THIS BUG IN THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM????

I just got a WD 1TB external and my older HP laptop with Windows 7 will not backup to it either. I think you might be right that it is a timing issue, so will get a 3.0 hub as you suggested and see if that works. It is silly to have to go to these measures. Fingers and toes crossed it works.

The powered 3.0 hub did not solve the problem. Per the advice of another messager I used the WD SmartWare software to do the backup and it worked perfectly! When I launched the software it was already telling me the laptop was backed up successfully. I ran it to be certain, but it appears all the files transferred when I ran it through Windows it's just that Windows was telling me it was not successful when it actually was. Not sure what is up with that. The real question is if/when the laptop crashes if it will run SmartWare to be able to retrieve the backup or will Windows be able to do it.

Okay it looks like SmartWare put restore files and a setup app on the drive, so should be able to run it from there.
