I just bought a 24'' insignia tv for my bedroom. I also had my VHS recorder ( yes I still have one and its just fine ) which was hooked up to the old analog TV. The TV has only one Ant input. The VCR is hooked up to it via rca cables...no component or HDMI. My VCR has to use the RCA cables. In this setup, I am able to see my tape on Chnl 3. I now wanted to set it up to record channels when necessary. I thought I would reassign the auto channel search mode for the vcr. It went through its scanning and after about a minute or so, it came back and said "Completed", but just below it said "No signal". I connected the rf out of the vcr to the Ant IN and still get the same message.."No signal". In the interim with the indoor antenna disconnected all this time, I was surprised that I could see all my TV channels without the benefit of the indoor antenna. My vcr remote shows channels changing on the display site of the vcr, but not on the TV. Any suggestions how I can the signal to the vcr via auto scan? The RF out of the VCR to the Ant in did not help.

Solution
Your VCR does not contain an over the air digital tuner so it cannot find them. If you really want to use the VCR to record over the air you would need to get a digital converter box which can feed the vcr. You would need to split the antenna to feed the TV and digital converter box. You would not be able to use the vcr tuner to change channels.
For playback only connect the antenna directly to the TV.
what you need to do if you have cable in the house is go from the cable box (tv output) then into the vcr ant in. then go from the vcr out to the ant in on the tv. on your tv there are inputs one is cable tv the other is ant input. most people set there tv to cable input. if your tv set to cable input you may have to change the output of the vcr to channel 3 or 4. if you set the tv up right and the vcr the cable channels will work fine with the vcr off. with the vcr on you have to put the tv on channel 3 or 4 and change the tv station by the vcr. in the vcr there going to be set up to use cable or ant.

Well, it did not work. I have tried different scenarios with the ant connected to the vcr in and the vcr out to TV and it always comes back no signal. The vcr manual mentions this that if I get a 'no signal' make sure the connections are correct. I have a feeling its the digital TV that is preventing this. I called Insignia tech support and they are confused as I am.

BY digital converter box....do you mean the one that the government offered a few years ago as analog channels was ending? If so, I still have one but don't know how to hook it up to a digital hdtv. I am able to playback my vhs tapes as it is. Thanks
