I'm building a gaming PC and can get the r9 270X for around £40 cheaper than an R7950. I know an r9 270x is basically an 7870GHz, but i want to know for next gen games such as BF4 how will it compare to a 7950 in FPS on a 1080P screen? Also I've heard about mantle replacing Directx11 as all next gen consoles are AMD based. Is mantle definitely going ahead and would it improve performance to match a 7950? Thanks :)

Wow so e of these people talking like mantle is the future and yet some things they got it al wrong. mantle is low level api for GCN architecture so it will work we with the new R series and 7k series because both were based on GCN architecture. And no it will not replacing direct x just because amd win all those console. Amd try to create the impression that mantle will be on the consoles by saying manlte is 'open' and cross platform. But recent blog post by microsoft specifically mention the main api for xbone will be direct x 11.x and amd mantle apiand open gl are not supported by xbone. And by saying open some people also jumping into conclusion that manlte will also work with other hardware like nvidia gpu which is completely...

Mantle will not work with both cards, will only be supported by GCN/Mantle cards which are currently only the R7 and R9 sries of AMD cards. Mantle is a replacement or Direct X, imagine Direct X is an engine that gets 35 miles to the gallon, well Mantle is an engine that will get 80 miles to the gallon through better fuel utilization which in turn will increase frames (rumoured by AMD to be approx double with mantle supported games. eg BF4)

In my opinion you should go with the 270X, i know it wont perform as well in non mantle suported games as the 7950 would, but it is also cheap enough that a crossfiore X solution is highly plausible.

Yes, they are. Your 7950 is a 270X... And dont listen to AMD's little marketing strategy. They want you to think that you HAVE to have a "new" X series card to run mantle. Soon in an update, BF4 will be the first game to fully support mantle publicly. AMD works with the DICE devs so I suspect things will be pretty magical in a way.

The GCN work fine with 7950...and the mantle is nothing solid yet, do not buy hoping GCN change much the way we see games(sorry for bad english)

As for developer to adopt mantle we will have to see. Just because battlefield 4 will available in mantle it doesn't mean every game based on frostbite 3 engine will. The purpose of mantle is to squeze out more performance from gpu by accessing the low level. That will benefit games that very demanding on hardware but for games that are not so heavy there might be no need to use mantle since it only add to the cost and time for developer. For example the upcoming need for speed rival will ne uaing frost bite 3 and the developer intended to cap tje frame rates at 30 fps for both console and pc. In such case maybe even current mid range card will be easy to get that. With such reason there is no need to code for mantle path for the game.
