Do higher res monitors need a more powerful comp?

I think I heard that if you use higher resolutions it strains your computer more. Is that true?

I have a 1650x1050 res monitor currently -->

I'm thinking of upgrading to a 1920x1080 such as -->

Since in league of legends you can't even see all of the screen if you don't have a 1920x1080 monitor and it's a disadvantage. My comp is from 2008 and I was thinking of upgrading it maybe, but won't be yet. So I wasn't sure if it would strain my computer even more for higher graphic intensive games with a higher res and I should just keep my 1650x1050? Thanks.

Yeah I mean upgrading to a 1920x1080 res monitor when I play other more intensive games such as Skyrim / Darksiders II / Rift.

My comp already can't play bigger games on max settings and also has lower fps, so I was wondering if also using a higher resolution monitor would make it even worse? (and basically if I should just wait until I upgrade my actual computer if I do) Thanks

I can't set it higher than 1650x1050 on this monitor. I think it limits it to that maximum. One time I even tried manually editing the LoL files to set my res to 1920x1080 but it would just reset back to a really low default res and I would have to change it back to 1650x1050 again, haha.

Ah yeah okay, thanks. So even if I get a 1920x1080 monitor if I decide it's too laggy for say Skyrim I can lower it back to 1650x1050 res also no problem? They'd both be widescreen monitors so it should be fine, eh? Thanks. But you think it isn't that big a difference anyway so it shouldn't matter though. Just curious so I don't blow ~$120 on a monitor that just makes my gaming performance even worse, haha.
