Hi,

a few days ago my Palit GTX 780 Jetstream arrived. As soon as I install a driver (Tried 320.18, 320.49, 327.23 & 331.40 Beta), the screen goes black after the Windows 7 welcome screen. I have to boot in safe mode, remove the driver, reboot and then it works again. As long as I do not have a driver installed, there is no problem using this card. It just gets recognized by Windows as a Standard VGA and runs stable.

System
MB - Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 (Rev 3.0)
CPU - AMD FX-4170
RAM - GeIL 4x4GB
VGA - Palit GTX 780 Jetstream
PSU - Enermax Triathlor 650W
OS - Win 7 x64

Is this a driver issue? Maybe a hardware issue although my system runs stable with my 560 Ti 448C respectively the GTX 780 runs stable without drivers. Help is very much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Bandyto

Hi Dylzan,

thanks for your quick response. Yes, the screen is on. I have tried two different monitors (DVI, HDMI) and the screen turns black after the Windows 7 welcome screen.

Another thing I have just recognized is that it seems like the system crashes after the welcome screen because after rebooting I see the 30sec selection menu which asks if I want to start Windows normally or run safe mode.

No, I have built in the card and after installing the Nvidia driver, the system crashes after the Windows 7 welcome screen but without a driver the system runs stable with the standard VGA driver from Windows.

Edit:
And I am also ablo to enter safe mode and BIOS without any problems, graphic glitches etc. The system just does not boot respectively enter Windows 7.

Hi Dylzan,

problem seems to be solved. It was not a software resp. driver issue. The cooler did not have direct contact with the chip and it turned off automatically in order to avoid overheating. Going to test the card extensively though the next hours.

Besides that, thank you for your time. Without checking the card etc. I may not have noticed it. ;-)

Your first step before putting the 780 card in should of been to remove the drivers for the 560 Ti 448C.

After that all of the required power connectors to the 780 should be connected to the card from the Enermax 650w psu.

If the card when in the system still crashes, or produces a black screen.
check all of the connections to the new card.
Also check that the four or eight pin extra 12v plug from the psu to the motherboard is connected correctly.

The four or eight pin to the motherboard not only supports voltage for the cpu, but it also provides extra power to the pci-e slot of the board.
If not connected once the driver loads it can cause a black screen.

The last thing to check is the 12v power rails of the PSU, and see if it can provide enough amps to drive the card.
Since a 780 is far more power hungry than a 560Ti card.

When the driver Nvidia driver loads it causes the card to draw more power.
So the result of having a psu that cannot provide enough power in amps from the the 12v power rail via the Pci-e power connectors results in a black screen.

You should check what the amp requirements of the 780 are from the 12v power rail of the Enermax 650w.

Small update:

Works like a charm. ~50°c constantly during gaming. Using Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme III now.

@ Shaun
PSU is more than sufficient according to Palit support and Enermax PSU specifications. Driver uninstallation had been done prior putting in the VGA. Checked connectors as well before posting in forums. ;-)
