Enhanced RAM Compatability?

I have a (about 10 yr old) PC with an Intel motherboard, running WinXP SP3, which up until recently had a total of 1.5 GB of DDR 400 RAM - ie. 1 GB and .5 GB sticks.
The PC stopped booting and after some trouble shooting I was able to get it running again by taking out the .5 GB RAM module.
I figured I had a bad RAM DIMM.
FYI the remaining 1GB module is a Mushkin "Enhanced" EM3200 #991456 unit.
When I tried however to replace the "defective?" .5 GB DIMM wit a known good RAM, the PC again wouldn't boot.
I wound up removing the Mushkin Enhanced RAM and trying some other DDR 400 PC3200 DIMMs but the PC wouldn't boot - ie, gave 3 beeps...
Looking for some advice on what this "enhanced" RAM is all about and to get a some more ( total of 2GB in the 2 slots) memory do I have to buy another 1GB "enhanced" DIMM for compatibility??
Also;
- can't understand why the .5GB standard PC3200 used to work with the Mushkin and
- why putting in only standard (low density) PC3200 RAM won't allow this 'garden variety' PC to boot...
Thanks and regards.

Thanks Mark for your advice and suggestions...

I'll play around a bit more with trying out different RAM and combos...

When I use the Mushkin "enhanced" "EM3200" 1 GB DIMM by itself in (what I'll call Slot 1 (nearest CPU) the PC boots and runs properly, but when I take out that unit and put in a good PC3200 1GB module in slot 1 I get the 3 beeps indicating bad RAM - not sure why...?
Ya'd think that slot was OK since the "enhanced" module works...

Gonna try putting just the PC3200 1GB in the 2nd slot and see what happens..

Cheers, Glen
Enhanced is merely a marketing name - it has nothing to do with the "ability" of the ram.

It sounds more like you have a bad ram slot. Try your good 1gb stick by itself in each ram slot. If it boot in slot "a" but not "b", your slot "b" is bad. If it boots in all slots, but you cannot use the .5gb without causing a crash, the .5gb ram is bad.

There sure seems to be something flakey with my unit.

The PC will boot and run OK with (only) the Mushkin 1 GB "enhanced" EM3200 DIMM in slot 1, but it won't run with a known good (in another PC) PC3200 1GB module and it will run with two 256 MB DIMMs in the 2 slots...
And it will try to start but freezes after the BIOS start up splash screen with the 1GB Mushkin in slot 1 and the 1GB PC3200 in slot 2...
For other combos it doesn't even get to the bios...

So I've come to the conclusion that the mobo, BIOS or ram slots are crapping out and I should just run this old dog with just the 1 GB Mushkin ram with a view to upgrading the whole PC some time soon...
