That depends on what it is and how it got there.

What indicates that you have an "unknown operating system"?

You likely did an upgrade or new install which has created the extra windows now unused directories. Do a couple of searches and you'll find instruction on how to take admin ownership of the directories so you can delete them. I will say its a pain in the butt to completely get ride of everything but you should be able to trash most of the files and free up space. The easiest solution obviously is backup, wipe the drive, and re-install your OS.

I have an older gateway laptop that without my ok my son tried to install win xp home edition that didnt work and I reinstalled win me with the recovery disks that came with laptop. Now I am trying to reinstall a canon printer and wont install with a message that unknown operating system has stopped install

So, we have a probable failed XP install, and then recovery with WinMe.

At this point, I'd wipe the disk fully (kill off ALL partitions, etc), and try an install again.

If you have a valid XP install, I'd use that. I know it came with WinMe initially, but that is probably the worst OS Microsoft even put out.

Well sir, I dont have a problem doing that I have a problem knowning how and the xp disk i have is for a dell and I dont have the code set it asks for

Well my son did n I dont know how to start my search to find the directories to delete them nor do I no how to wipe the drive clean do u have any suggestions??
