Recover computer name from Recovery Disc??

I am helping a friend recover her Acer Aspire and she needs to use her recovery CDs which I made when we set her PC up about a year ago. Somehow the computer name got changed and the recovery CDs say they are not for that PC. I know they are as that is the only PC she has, and I personally made them. I believe the computer name on the PC and on the recovery CDs must match. I wrote down her info when we set it up, but she cannot find that yellow-lined piece of paper, unfortunately. Is there any way to get the original name from her recovery CDs? I am in another state but her somewhat tech-savvy son-in-law is helping from her end. Would choosing the option for recover and set to original factory status work? I've tried every form of her name I can think of for her computer name, but no go. To do this, I used MSoobe, which also asks for a password.

I believe her problem occurred when she turned off her PC during the 10/8/13 Patch Tuesday update. It got stuck at 32% and wouldn't move and she left it all day, so I'm thinking it failed.

She lives in a town of 163 people and the nearest place to get it fixed is 80 miles away. She has some functionality but cannot download a purchased version of new software because we cannot get the network connection going. I'm thinking the operating system is just in a mess and if we can figure out the computer name, we might get it straightened out fi the recovery CDs will work.

Unfortunately, my brain cells don't seem to have that name saved so I'm no help there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The recovery CDs do the same thing as a factory restore, meaning wipe out all the data/programs and settings and put it back the way it was when you bought it. The computers name has no affect on either, and the recovery disks don't use it. They either are, or think they are the wrong disks and there not much you can do about it.

Wiping the entire machine seems awfully drastic over a simple network issue though... Rolling back to before the update or reinstalling drivers makes more sense to me.

Thanks for responding. I assumed that this was true for two reasons. One, I get the message "This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs."
Second, I read somewhere online that someone else was having the problem. He said that he got this message and it also said that the recovery discs were prepared for SAMS30 computer.

I have since read that if the system partition is damaged in anyway it may keep the recovery discs from working. This is quite possible!

I could definitely be wrong about this!

Thanks, unksol, for responding. This is a last resort, unfortunately. It is not just a network problem. I just didn't list the other things that happened so I wouldn't bore you all. The fact that I now at least have a real Windows screen means we have made some progress! I was hoping for an easier fix. Even after getting the message about the PC not being supported (above), it still went on to load something. I just have no confidence in it. Her son-in-law called the ISP and said everything looked just fine. So, I'm thinking the operating system is just totally hosed. It doesn't seem to be a hard drive problem. Those diagnostics seem to pass.

Thanks again.
