Which Intel CPU in new desktop PC question.

Hi all,

My wife is really sensitive to PC fan noise and operating noise. Several years ago I built her an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 ghz system with 2 gig of RAM and Windows XP Home. I put this in a Nexus sound insulated case from EndPCNoise.com. It is running Windows XP Home and is virtually instantaneous in response with all here programs. There is no need to upgrade this PC from a performance standpoint.

However she still tells me it is too noisy.

So I'm now building her a fan free system. I have a NOFAN case and CPU cooler (if you haven't seen one of these it's a massive thing) and a fanless power supply as well as a couple of Samsung 120 gig SSD hard drives (program and data). The plan was to move the M/B,CPU etc into the new case after cloning the existing hard drives onto the new SSD drives.

Everything went according to plan until I discovered the new NOFAN case will only take an ATX Micro M/B and the existing M/B is ATX. So that kills the plan to just move the components into the new fan free case. As such I have to build a complete new system in the fan free case.

So......finally.......my question. Since the existing system is just fine in terms of performance will stepping up to an Intel I3 CPU as vs an I5 be more than enough of a step up?

I will load Windows 8 on the new system as long as all her programs will run with it (still to be checked out). My first choice is Windows 8 64 bit, second choice Windows 8 32 bit and third choice is Windows 7. I've got Windows 8 64 bit on 2 systems now and have a handle on making it user friendly (Classic Shell). I think I have a better chance of all her programs running on Win8 32 bit but would like to put in 8 gig of RAM instead of the 4 gig I'm limited to with the 32 bit version.

Thanks for the help,
BH

i think for a completely passive setup the I3-3220T or even the I5 3570S would be viable.
