Im an american that relocated to canada to play online poker. Internet is very important to me. First place i stayed at... the internet was wifi... very very bad and unreliable. Moved to another apartment and was told internet here in this building is very fast in montreal, uses videotron. Well many times the internet has problems and doesn't connect or works but it disconnects on and off or is very very slow, basically doesn't work. Thing is when i was looking for an apartment, i have to look for a furnished place and of course internet. Some places they told me the internet has both wired internet and wireless. I prefer wired b/c its more reliable.

At this building, internet is wireless wifi and shared between 16 apartments. I use the internet more than anyone im pretty sure. People here probalby just go online very little a day but to me, i need it on all day.

The router is about 1 floor when i go down the stairs. Its basically in this room where there are 2 routers there and 2 connections. I was told if internet is ever slow or doesn't work, just go there and unplug the router wait 1 minute then plug it back in. I did that last time and it worked but didn't work that well and i had to wait a while for the wifi to work.

My quesiton is, is there a way for me to get wired internet? I know some apartments here in montreal have option of wired as well. I wonder how this would be even possible. I mean, is each apartment given a router and a modem inside the apartment? Or would they have to connect a wire from the modem in the apartment to the router outside the apartment?

I know you can call and have wired internet installed from a company but probably is i only need it for few months and i think many only do 1 year contracts? Does anyone know what other options i have?

I think the other option is to get a wireless internet stick and use that if my wifi doesn't work? Again my building is a bunch of apartments that are all furnished and everything with cable tv and internet and electricity. I had moved here b/c i was told the internet was very fast and reliable but its not that reliable. I dont even care about speed that much, i just cannot have disconnections.

Wireless in an apartment building will never be reliable enough -- too many users and too much interference.

I would look into other options like DSL, cable Internet, or 4G if you really want reliable service without disconnects, and then use Ethernet cables in your apartment from your modem/router or at least use the 5GHz band which is still far less used than 2.4GHz.

Electronic box gets pretty good reviews: http://www.electronicbox.net/ but I'm not in your market so have no personal experience to relate.

If its just the wireless access point or router that you have to reboot (unplug) and is cheap garbage and the modem is stable you could plug in your own router set on a clear channel and use encryption so only you can use it, or replace so everyone can use it and take it with you when you leave.

Or if possible run a wire from the modem, it may not be any use if you plug it into the router and it locks up completely not just the wifi.

Another thing is. Playing poker uses very little connection from internet. Where you live there is probably people playing hard core gaming or called real games like call of duty and such. Why not just get dsl or cable? It's unsafe to even be in same network as others unless you're good in securing you're computer. Anyway's on routers sometime you have to switch differen't encryption in the router web page. I had a belkin that no matter what it doesn't work with WPA2 or WEP so it had to be open to be reliable. Stick ur own good quality router directly to the modem and then hook up the cheap router to lan port of ur router if owner of apartment lets u.
