Hi guys~

I've heard that the top end cards would be overkill if i am only gonna be doing 1080p gaming, is that true?

if so, what models would be overkills? 780? 770? or even 7970?

Solution
In some games it will be, in other games it won't be. I wouldn't call any of them overkill but there is diminishing value in price/performance.

Besides, any extra power that may not be needed currently at your resolution, may be needed in an upcoming game. If money isn't an issue then go big, the card will only be relevant longer.

If you're looking for good value, I'd recommend the 7970GE/r9280x.

If you're a fan of nvidia, gtx 770. However you're paying an extra $100 for about an extra 2 or 3 frames.

What games will you be playing, and at what settings?

I have a 7950 and that pretty much runs anything i want at 60fps max graphics. i guess that it might be overkill, but hey, I had the money ;). If your on a budget, then I would recommend something in the 7870/GTX 660 area for good 1080p gaming.

Ultimately, it depends on what your expectations are and what games you want to play. The following benchmarks are from the review of the GTX 780 linked below:

The GTX 760 is probably nvidia's best price/performance card, a very solid mid tier card. However, for a $50 difference between it and the r9 280x, you're giving up a lot more frames. You give up 7-12 frames depending on the game I believe, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, I'm estimating here.

Choice is up to you but in my opinion, the r9 280x is the best option for you and overall the best price/performance option currently.
