1680 X 1050 DVI D or VGA?

Hello,
I have an old dell 2009wt monitor with dvid and vga connections. I'm wondering which of the ports to use? I know both dvid and vga can support the max resolution but which one would be better?

if you want to connect it via DVI-D you need a VGA cable too.So its better to go with VGA

Wouldn't a HDMI cable also work with an adapter? Here's the full situation. I have a computer with DVI VGA and HDMI output. I also have a laptop with VGA and HDMI output. I was to connect both to the monitor and be able to easily switch between the two inputs but I'm not sure what to connect what.
