Worth upgrading from 7870xt to gtx 780?

Hi all,

I live in the UK and am about to visit Texas. Graphics cards here in the UK are more expensive and I'm considering upgrading.

I'm currently rocking a Powercolor 7870 xt myst edition which set me back £173 (~$276) when I picked it up in the summer, with a i5-2500k and 8 gigs of ram at 1600mhz. My PSU is a Corsair 600W.

I've had a look at prices on Newegg and I could pick up an EVGA GTX 780 with a worldwide warranty for about $660 (This is ignoring sales taxes. If someone could explain how much I'd pay in total that would be great). The equivalent prices in the UK are much higher, such as on Scan - http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/gpu-nv... at £510.

This converts to $814. Do you guys think it's worth me upgrading, knowing that I would save about £100 by buying in the states?

Is it worth forking out the £400 or so after I sell my current card for the improvement I'll see?

Well it depends.
If you need the power of the 780, if you play at over 1080p and want max details on every game or you play on more than 1 monitor, then yes, get it. The 780 is way more powerful than the 7870.

Though you have to keep in mind that the R9 290X is coming out shortly and that may be better that 780 (i say may because we don't know since there are no benchmarks yet, coming october 15th).

On the money side, getting the gpu from there is worth it, cause computer parts are less expensive in US because they don't have VAT. I got my gpu from US also.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I'm currently gaming with one BenQ 120hz monitor at 1080p and would love to max out everything. It's an Nvidia 3d vision capable monitor, but I'm still not sure if I'd buy the kit even if I did pick up an Nvidia card.

I've noticed my 7870xt has load up lag on games like dishonoured and I can also see frame stuttering when the FPS slips down to the mid 40's on some games. I have no idea why I can see the frame drops, whether it's because I have a high refresh monitor, because the frame pacing on the GPU is particularly bad or because I have a super human ability to spot drooping fps's, but my hope is that the problems might not occur with an Nvidia card, or specifically a 780.

With regards to VAT, don't you have to pay a sales tax or something above the advertised prices in Texas?

I don't know about texas, my uncle lives in washington (the state) and there there was no tax (or maybe it was included), still prices are way lower than europe.

As for the fps drops, the 780 would definitely solve that. And most games will run so that you can enjoy the 120hz monitor to the fullest. But it is up to you if you want to spend that money.

780 is around 40% faster then 7870xt(~7950). http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_7...

I will say wait for amd 290x then price of 780 will come down

Hmm, Good point about the 290x.

However, I might have left the US before any potential price drop. Even if it dropped by £50 in the UK it would still be cheaper for me to get a 780 now in the States.
