Hi guys,

I need a little help with my A6-3500. I just need it from 2.1ghz to 2.7ghz for my gaming needs.

Specs:

CPU: A6-3500 2.1ghz
MB: Gigabyte A75M-DS2
RAM: 1 piece HyperX Blu 4g @ 1600MHZ
GPU: XFX 7790

Ram defaulted by my board to 1333/9 9 9 24/1.5v

What i tried:

changed ram settings to 1600/9 9 9 27/1.65v (set 1333 to 1600 by changing "System Memory Multiplier" from 13.33 to 16)

BCLK/PCIe Clock Control - left it at AUTO (100MHZ)

CPU NB CLOCK DIVISOR - left it at AUTO (6.00)

CPU NB CLOCK FREQUENCY - 666MHZ

CPU CLOCK RATIO - set it to 27 (default @ 21)

CPU FREQUENCY - 2.7ghz

SYSTEM MEMORY MULTIPLIER - set it to 16 (default @ 13.33)

MEMORY FREQUENCY (MHZ) - 1600Mhz

So, I basically just changed cpu clock ratio from 21 to 27. It booted but I see some screen flickering and get a BSOD from time to time.

Questions:

-was I too simple minded, should I have done something else to make it stable?

or

-is OC from 2.1 to 2.7 just too much?

I know I just missed out on something as I am very new to OC-ing.

Please help! :D

Solution

did you turn off cool& quiet. if not turn it off after i did that my bosds stoped even tho my temps stayed the same. also maybe you better leav your ram at default

Do not bother setting multiplier higher than the turbo's 24 ratio. It will not work. You can raise it all the way to 47, and it will show it clocked at 4.7ghz but trust me when I say your benchmarks and temp will be the same as it would be at 2.4ghz. It's a well known bug with Llano chips.

If you want to overclock, you will have to raise the fsb, which is possible, but only to a certain point, and don't expect very much. Maybe 200-300mhz at most.

But please post your findings as you figure it all out.

You want better gaming, get a dual channel RAM kit @ 1866mhz. You will see a very noticeable improvement. APUs really benefit by faster ram and dual channel as opposed to single channel. In fact, it's about the only time dual channel ram is obviously better other than in benchmarks.

thank you for the replies

@CTurbo - what is fsb? which part in my post does fsb correlate to?

@CTurbo - noted. will get another 1600 stick or buy 2 new 1866 sticks later this month.

A processor's clock speed is derived from it's front bus speed(fsb) x the clock ratio, or multiplier.
These days most cpus use an even 100mhz fsb like yours.

100mhz x 21 multiplier = 2.1ghz

cpus that have "unlocked" multipliers can just raise their multiplier like you tried to do. (27x100mhz) but your cpu is NOT unlocked. You can't *really* raise your multiplier. Overclocking via multiplier is BY FAR the easiest way to overclock. The only other way to over clock is to raise the fsb. You would go into the bios and raise it a very little at a time.
Examples -
105mhz x 21 = 2.205ghz,
110mhz x 21 = 2.31ghz,
120mhz x 21 = 2.52ghz

You would want to start at 101 or 102 and make sure it's stable, and then go up little by little. Don't just jump in at 110.

****WARNING***

Overclocking your fsb is advanced stuff and you need to know that it effectively overclocks your entire motherboard. (ram, igpu, pci, usb, etc...)
Don't expect much of an increase using this method. Raising the fsb also brings on the heat pretty quickly too. You will need an aftermarket cooler. You would need to bump up the voltage bit by bit to get results. I do not recommend you even try unless you know more about what you are doing. There are too many variables.

im putting mine on 107 fsb x 24 multiplier. and trying it now. i still have all voltages set to AUTO as i have absolutely no clue where to set it.

according to another forum i posted on, for 2.7ghz - 1.30v should be enough. where on earth do i go on my bios to set this?

will continue testing once i get a 2nd stick. went back to 100 fsb. 24 multiplier. 1600 9 9 9 27 1.65v

now running at a good stable 2.4ghz on 1600.

i noticed increasing the fsb really gives dramatic improvements with the MMO i play (dragon nest)

but at the same time, im getting instability even @ 107.

im thinking of giving up and just upgrade to i5 haswell with z87 mobo and keep my ram sticks. its about time anyway :(

Did you try smaller increments? Like 102, 103, etc...
107 is too high to start off at IMO.

Just invest in a $20-30 cooler and you can bump the voltage a tad to stabilize the fsb increases.

I would think that 110 x 24 @2.64ghz would be realistic with a good cooler. Maybe even a bit higher. 2.7-2.8 should be attainable.

Also, getting a 2nd ram stick will help a lot. Faster ram will help a lot too. You should be able to find a 2x2GB 1866mhz ram kit for less than $45. You could sell your single 4GB stick for $20ish easily.

I'm telling you going from 1 1600ghz dimm to 2 1866ghz dimms will make a huge impact.

Are you familiar with the other llano apus for the fm1 socket?

The A6-3650 or 3670K would be pretty decent upgrades from your 3500. ~$70ish
The A8-3850 or 3870K would be really good upgrades for you. ~$80ish

Of course, you still want to use fast dual channel memory with any of them.

@ CTurbo: Very stable @ 105 fsb. But can hardly notice fps imporvements. Needed it @ 107-110 for it to be noticeable. I am buying those ram I mentioned TODAY. Please stop me if those ram don't work.

"That mobo requires 1.5v memory. 1.65v memory MAY work, it may not. I would not even try. Just find some 1.5v ram.

It also says that it supports up to 2400(OC) which means that that is the maximum overclocked speed it will handle. It looks like 1866 is the fastest stock speed it will support.

Get this instead - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... "

There's a reason why im picking 2133 over 1600/1866, its after reading on this:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1366657/ddr3-1600-vs-2133-is-there-a-difference-in-game

1.65v works fine on my board. I've tried it on my current Kingston hyperx blu stick.

I hope that new RAM works out for you. What RAM have you been using?

If you're stable @ 105, have you tried to bump it up a bit? If 106 is not stable, you can try to bump the voltage up the smallest increment and try again. I wouldn't go very high though on the stock cooler. One or two increments at most. Always check your temps!

A good aftermarket cooler should get you to 110 I would think. Of course the difference between 105 and 110 is only 120mhz but it's still better than nothing.

If you can get that new Ram running like it's supposed to it will help you a lot!

Crossing my fingers on the ram as well. Ill probably take my computer to the shop, that way ill definitely see if it boots or not.

Will look around for aftermarket coolers today. I tried looking at my bios to see what you meant by upping the voltage little by little.

CPU VCORE <---- this is what you mean right?
