Would failing CPU Account For Symptoms?

I have an Acer Aspire X1301 with an AMD Athlon II X3 425 CPU. The computer is failing. The first symptom was a message that the hard disk might be failing. Then the computer started to take long (5-10 sec or so) pauses during operations. For example, I would click on Start Menu, and the actual menu doesn't come up until this long pause. Now the system won't even load a Windows 7 repair disk from boot - it just freezes. I used windows 7 memory test and the memory seemed to check out OK.

Could the CPU be responsible for these symptoms? does the Athlon have a built-in disk controller? Should I try buying a new CPU and replacing the existing CPU? Should I just get another PC? I'm desperate here. Thanks for your help.

If it tells you the disk is failing, that would be a good place to start with whats going on with your system. Most likely it is your hard drive. Very rarely is it ever the CPU when a PC fails. Short of melting them with crappy cooling or stupid OCs, the CPU very rarely ever fails.

Sounds like you got some hardware problem, but I can't tell which component (could be HDD, motherboard, or CPU). However, because of the age of your computer, it might be more practical to just get a new PC. If you want to build it (which I, and others i am sure, recommend), just let us know and we can help you out.

Originally, I thought the hard disk was actually failing, so I replaced it with a cloned Sandisk 128 GB SSD. But I still get the same symptoms! Sometimes the computer even reports that there is no boot disk!

Unfortunately, both the DVD and the drive C: hard disk seem to be having similar symptoms. I think it's even occurring when there is no disk access.

I could get a new CPU for about $50 on eBay. But it would be a lot of hassle. Have any of you ever heard of a failing CPU pausing for a few seconds before continuing processing like that?
