What GPU and PSU are you using?

There are adapters available, but if that power supply doesn't have enough connectors for the card, there comes a concern that it may not have the power for it.

Are you trying to set up SLI, or just the one card? One card should need 2 six-pin power connectors, while 2 cards would need 4. Also, nVidia recommends 500 W for one card, so an SLI rig with that power supply may be underpowered.

But just to answer your original question, all power connectors are needed for the GPU to work correctly.

It is for the one card so I will go out an buy an adapter or I will give up one of the fans so it works correctly

Now it all makes sense...

You are already using adapters to power the card, aren't you? Two 4-pin Molex connectors to one 6-pin PCI Express adapters? Your power supply doesn't already have at least one 6-pin cable (may be 6+2, where 2 pins are combined with a 6-pin connector to make an 8-pin connector)?
