Disabling the router on a DSL modem/router combo

I bought an ASUS wireless router to connect to a Frontier Communications DSL modem for a friend. I then found out that the DSL modem is a modem/wireless router all-in-one. Is there any way I can disable the router on the modem so that he will only be using the new ASUS router as his wireless access point? I've never worked with a DSL modem/router combo before.

You can't turn it off 'completely'.

Things you can do:
Turn off DHCP
Turn off the firewall
Cause the secondary router to obtain a static IP from the modem/router thing.

But....is there a problem with the ISP supplied device? Is there something that it doesn't do that you need?

Quite often the modem/router combo needs to be reset multiple times per day because out sends out a poor signal. There is an internet jukebox connected directly to it with a CAT6 cable, and it never has any problems. This led me to believe that the modem is fully functional, but the router portion is not.

This jukebox is connected to one of the LAN ports? And works all the time?
Then the issue might be something else.
