Now, I recently upgraded to Windows 8. I had no problems with this computer, in fact, I can still use it for normal use. But when I try to play a game, or run a stress test on the GPU, the system just completely shuts down and reboots.

First thoughts:

  • I was overclocked to 4.3Ghz on my CPU, I disabled that.....no joy
I was overclocked on my GPU to 130%, disabled that......no joy
I upgraded to the BETA drivers from nVidia's website.....no joy
I uninstalled graphics drivers and attempted to reinstall them.....computer would not let me reinstall them, would just reboot and show the previous drivers.....no joy
I can reboot into safe mode no problem, computer runs fine.
I completely removed card from system, inspected for damage (None Found), dusted PC,
booted with GPU on motherboard (Intel HD4000) and computer ran fine, so did games (albeit at a REALLY low frame rate)....
Used DriverSweep to completely uninstall drivers, reinstalled card.....Successfully was able to install drivers (Latest according to GeForce Xperience app).......ran game for 10 minutes and it crashed.....
Ran stress test using MSI Kombuster for 30 minutes before it crashed, temps and voltage all within regulation.
Have 5 system fans, computer never gets above 100F even with games.
Ran "WhoCrashed" and every single time, it says that nvlddmkm.sys is to blame.....

So my question is....is this Windows 8 that is causing this, or is it just bad timing that my card fails after I upgrade to Windows 8?

I really really really dont want to spend another $350 on a GTX680, so I am hoping for the sake of all that is Holy that there is something I can do.

Second thoughts:

  • Install Ubuntu and see if the card works there.
Buy a second card and see if it works, if it does then I know it was the card....possibly return bad card to nVidia

What can you all help me with here? Anyone know of a possible solution?

Solution
you posted all your info but the info for your power supply. with gpu they can crash if the fans dont spin up as the gpu is loaded...use msi afterburner to set a 100 percent fan speed at 50 c see if it still crashes. the other issue is dirty or weak power supply.

Thanks, I have a CORSAIR CMPSU-750HX 750W RT PSU. I have never had problems other than recently. I have checked the card and the computer and there is no dust backups anywhere in the machine.

You suggestion of using MSI Afterburner, can I just download that?

EDIT: Also I was able to run a stress test using Kombuster for about 30 minutes before it crashed...that can't tell me anything? The card was at 98% load the entire time and never got into dangerous temps.

So I contacted ASUS Customer Support. I am waiting on their reply. Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this before I send back a possibly "good" card for repair which would cost me money?

OK, I ran that utility and I have my fan set to 100% at 60, and so far (after 15 minutes of 100% stress test) its running fine. I am gonna run a game to see if it stays. I will let you know.

OK, So after turning my fan on my GPU up to 80% during normal gameplay, I was able to play for one hour with no crashes. Looks like it might be a cooling issue. I will roll with this as the solution for now. Thanks for helping me out! Hopefully this is the issue.
