First off, I have the Alienware X51, I purchased it early June, it has the Intel i3 processor. I already know the processor I want to upgrade it to, but I'm having trouble with finding a graphics card that is compatible. I was looking at the GeForce GTX 770, but I looked it up and the power supply won't work, and apparently there is no way to fit a newer power supply into the X51's case. I currently have the GeForce GTX 645 in my X51. If you could give me a good graphics card that will work with this machine. That'd be very helpful, I'm willing to pay at least 500 dollars for a new one. Thanks.

Try to conntact dell and find out what type of PSU you have. You may ethier A.)Not have the power or B.) not have the right connectors
It's just an Alienware Power Supply 240 Watts. I know for sure that won't support GTX 770. The GTX 770 would work with my computer, IF there is some way I can get a larger power supply in my computer. Is there a way to safely have my power source connected to my X51, just not inside the tower? Like I'd leave the side panel open at all times and have the power supply placed next to it.

Generally SFF PCs aren't really made to be upgraded since all the components are so tightly packed into the case. SFF PCs are engineered with specific components in mind and altering said components can obstruct mapped airflow paths and lead to overheating and other issues. Having the side panel off could also drastically reduce the air pressure which could prevent certain components from getting adequate airflow.
I have heard of an external 330w PSU for the X51 but I know very little about it and cant recommend attaching a $500 video card to it.
Have you considered rebuilding the system in an aftermarket mATX case? This way you won't be so restricted to Alienware's terms. I am sure you can get a new case and 500w PSU for under $100. Just make sure the PSU from a reputable vendor like Corsair, Silverstone etc.

You want a PSU with, at the very least, a Bronze rating and a single 12V rail, especially if you plan on putting in a high end video card. Remember the PSU is the heart of your system and if it dies it can take every component with it. Its definitely worth spending the extra $20.
