sli 680 2gb+2gb vs single 680 4gb vs single 690 4gb? i've read a post of someone saying sli 2gb+2gb is still 2gb, but wouldn't games recognize 4gb?

Solution
The more graphics ram the better on one monitor? No. The more graphics ram the better on multi-monitor? Damn YES. If you have 4GB while playing BF4, lets assume its still in beta, you will have no significant increase in FPS, but with more than one monitor, then it will utilize the 2GB+ graphics memory.

A single 690 4gb is almost the same as two 680 2gb's in SLI. Games dont fully utilizes 4GB Graphics memory, except if you're using multi-monitors then it will utilize it.

considering two 680s will be better than one 690, and i am using a single 1080p monitor(my tv, actually), best to get a second 680? and will games utilize the other 2gb in the second 680?
