Hello all,

I currently have an EVGA GTX 580 1.5gb which I have had for a good while now (2 years or more?). Performance wise it has done me well although it has driven me mad with its noisey fan sinse day one.

Anyway, it is starting to lag behind and I am looking to upgrade. I recently built a new system (minus a gpu + psu) due to my old one giving up. Specs of new system are:

    CPU: i5 4670k
    MOBO: ASUS z87-PRO
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 2 x 4gb 1866mhz 9-10-9-27
    PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA 750

I will also be investing in a 120mhz 1920 x 1080 monitor in the near future so that is also to be considered in my decision. Currently I still have a fairly old 60mhz 1680 x 1050.

The bottom line is I want to be able to load up a game, stick it on ultra settings and play at 1920 x 1080 without worrying about turning down a few settings to get a smooth experience. That's what everybody wants right? :D

I've been looking at: EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked with ACX Cooler 2GB but am not quite sure if that would cut the mustard. Then I think perhaps two of those SLI, but then is that probably overkill and also pose possible issues with my PSU not having enough power?

I'm very much open to options at this point, my budget is negotiable but I don't want to go overkill for the sake of it.

If anyone has recently made a similar upgrade and can share their knowledge that would be awesome, or any guru's out there with some good advice?

Many thanks for reading,
Oli

Hello
The EVGA and MSI Twin frozr 770 are great high end cards and will give you a very smooth experience at 1080p maxed out for all games with very high frame rates .If you budget will stretch perhaps look at a gtx 780 from EVGA,MSI and gigabyte which will last you a while. using 770s in sli is not worth it as some games don't use sli well and using 2 cards uses lots of power when you could just get a card more powerful. i believe you should never start a build with sli but perhaps use sli when you card is older and you need for performance. And always remember to check benchmarks of your favourite games on the card you choose
good luck

@Finair14 thanks for your advise. I think i'm more swayed toward the 780 for the future proofing. This also opens up the option to use my 27" DELL at 2560 x 1440 resolution (I currently just use it for DTP).

I've seen articles mention a price drop on NVIDIA cards at the end of this year (this one for example), I wondered if anyone has more insight to this they can share? If so I could happily wait until Q1 of 2014 to make my purchase (depending how bad BF4 runs on my 580 :D  :D  )

Thanks again guys, advise is massively appreciated.

780ti arrived (it owns the titan lol) so the prices of the 780 had a decent drop. Gtx 780(ti)/770/ r9 290(x) are all solid future proof gpu's. the gtx 780ti/290x will run ultra @1080p the longest ofcourse but at a higher price point. The question is how long do you want it to last till you need to buy a second one to sli?

Hi Vass, thanks for you reply. I actually bought a 780 last week (the EVGA SC ACX version) as the prices went down with the release of the TI's. Got it for less than £400 so can't complain - currently running BF4 / AC4 more or less maxed out @ 2560 x 1440.

Thanks everyone for your answers
