Hi everybody.

I'm hoping somebody can help me with this as it's driving me crazy.

About two weeks ago I put a new PSU in my HTPC as the original one was giving me checksum errors and random shut downs. I also put a new heatsink in as the one I had in was always noisy and didn't cool particularly well.

After putting in the new components the PC worked fine and the PSU stopped the problems with shutdowns etc. However I noticed it was still running a little hot so I applied new thermal paste and reseated the heatsink. I started the PC and the CPU fan was spinning at full speed. I had no display and no beeps.

I thought I may have not reseated the CPU properly or may have damaged it so I removed the heatsink, resat the CPU and restarted the PC. Same problem as before. I tried the old PSU in case the new one went faulty but the same thing happened with the old one. I also tried with just the on board video.

I then tried the CPU in a friends computer with the same socket. Worked fine.

I then thought seeing as I had no beeps and no display no matter what I did that the motherboard was at fault. I've seen this happen before. So I ordered a new motherboard which was delivered today.

I put in the new motherboard, reapplied new thermal paste to the CPU etc. and started the PC virtually positive the problem was sorted. Nope, same thing as before. Only difference is this time I'm getting one beep so the computer is posting. Just the CPU spins at full speed and no display.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? I've worked with computers for some time and have never encountered something like this. Before you ask, I have breadboarded it and have switched the RAM around.

I did think it may be the RAM but surely two sticks wouldn't die at exactly the same time. If I remove both sticks the speaker goes crazy with short beeps one after the other. With one or both it gives one post beep but as I said no display and CPU spinning at full speed.

PLEASE somebody shed some light on this it's driving me bananas. I've read a lot of threads with similar problems but they all have a different combination of problems.

Thanks

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Specs -

Biostar G41D3+
Q9550
4GB Corsair DDR3
Sapphire 7750
Corsair 500W CX PSU

Yes I've checked and the pins are fine. Also made sure there wasn't any dust that could be causing a short. Yep, I discharged myself.

1 beep - "Memory refresh timer error"

that and the change when you pull the memory, maybe both ram sticks did die at the same time. you have any other memory you can test with?

Hi.

Yes, I've read that. But it sounds like a typical POST beep to me. It's not long or short. I've had memory errors a long time in the past and every time it's been a short beep followed by three long ones.

I suppose it could be the RAM but I've never heard of two sticks going at the exact same time. I can't quite remember but I'm not sure the CPU fan would spin at full speed with a memory error either.

Don't have any other RAM and I'm reluctant to buy new RAM and it turns out to not be the problem to start with.

Is there anything else it could be?

Yep checked that. None whatsoever. Also checked all the capacitors etc in case I got a bad board. All fine.
