280X in Crossfire on an Asus Crosshair V Board

Hello All,

I have 4 2.0 PCI Express x16 and 2 x1 slots on my board, and I was wondering if it can handle a pair of R9 280X cards in crossfire? I read that these new cards aren't using crossfire cables anymore, instead it will be done through the slot itself. Is there any truth to that?

I know 3.0 cards will work in 2.0 slots, but I'm concerned about crossfire. If that is going to be an issue then I'll wait for the 290X.

the 280x has an xfire bridge, it's the 290x/290 that doesn't.

and yes, 2.0x16 is more then enough for a 280x in xfire.

Thanks for that. I appreciate the clarification. If I go the way of a 290X and want to add a 2nd later on I'll probably need a new board?

just go for the faster single card, crossfire is a problematic joke.
