Realtek HD Audio Manager Not Recognizing Front Ports Properly

So I built my computer about a year ago (my first) and back in June I purchased a set of gaming headphones for BF3. When I initially started using them by plugging the jacks in the front ports all worked as it should. I would get a pop up for both headphone and mic port saying they had been plugged in and was able to configure them as I pleased.

For 2 months everything worked great until sometime in August when the manager would not recognize my headphones when I plugged them into the front. It recognized the mic but my configuration was lacking. If I changed the setting to AC97 instead of HD audio then the headphones were recognized as speakers but the mic wasn't recognized. I hadn't changed any settings or made any updates to the audio components of the computer. It just stopped working one day.

I read many forum posts with similar issues and tried changing around some settings in the manager and that had no affect. I figured it had to be a driver issue so I tried everything I could think of (roll back, update to latest, etc.). None of that worked. I checked my bios to make sure that was still configured to HD audio out of front port and not AC97 and it was. I even updated my bios drivers to no avail.

I finally resorted to plugging both into ports on the back of my computer and it works to a degree. The headphones work but are standard stereo sound with no surround affects available (like previously with the front ports). And I had to drastically adjust the mic to be able to receive any audio (probably b/c I'm using a subwoofer or rear speaker port on the back, but I'm not positive).

So my front ports are rendered useless and I'm wondering what else it might be. I've been sufficing for a few months now but it is frustrating not having something work like it should. Has anyone else had this problem or know of how to fix it?

Please help.

Did you check the header on your MOBO? I know I had an issue with my headphones and I found that my HD Audio front panel cable was somewhat loose where it connects to the MOBO. Make sure you discharge yourself and power the PC off/unplug it before checking inside.

I haven't thought of that yet, but it's worth a try. Thanks for the tip. I'll let you know if it works.
