Dual independent displays

I would like to run my Asus 27" monitor as my main screen and have a secondary smaller Dell 17" display as a secondary display to put HWMonitor and other programs that run in the background but can be visible when I have games up or other full screen applications.

Video card is MSI Radeon HD7770 GHz edition.

How does one go about doing this?

Yeah, usually the res won't change to fit across all screens (I have never seen this happen) and considering one is 17" and the other 27" I don't think the resolutions are the same and would not be allowed to play extended if this is the case.
