SSD vs HDD

I'm making a list of what to buy for a computer I will be building soon. I'll be using it for gaming, mostly online/multiplayer stuff (days, battlefield, Star Wars The Old Republic, Elder Scrolls Online), but I'm also a facebook junkie and I post lots of pictures and have a pretty good sized itunes library. I'm good with my hands and have never built a machine before but I build cars and have a buddy helping me with the machine who is familiar with putting them together as he has built a couple himself. My question is concerning storage. Should I get one solid state drive, one big hard drive, one good sized drive of each type? Does having both an SSD and HDD possibly overcomplicate things for someone like me who simply installs and plays a game or opens up steam and plays a game? lol, I hope the questions are clear enough. Most of my games are on disc of some kind and I install them. I just am curious what would be a better route for me. I have a decent chunk of change set aside for this process, so cost isn't much of an issue.

Solution
Get an SSD and install windows on it and use it as a boot drive and for the games you play the most, then format the HDD with NTFS for storage. Its no big deal, the only complication is the minute or so it takes to format the HDD.

You will regret not getting the SSD if you do not, your system will be alot quicker with one.

Boo is right on, I would add change the Download folder to your hard drive and away from your SSD. Move all you documents and data to the hard drive and not on the SSD. Keep your SSD lean and that will keep it mean. As the SSD fills up it will slow down.

Agreed. Install OS, games and programs on SSD. All data should remain on the mechanical drive. The best setup for this would be a Plextor M5P Xtreme 256Gb and a Western Digital Black 7200rpm mechanical hard drive.

Thank you very much for the great replies. I haven't any idea what 'NTSF' means though.

Just so I understand properly....any games and programs...maybe iTunes or Microsoft word, what have you, would be installed to the SSD while music/photos/word documents/pdfs and so on would be saved to the hard drive?

NTFS is the file system. It replaced FAT. It is faster and utilizes the hard drive better.

And yes. You got it! Programs on the SSD. Data on the mechanical.

Good luck!
