formatting my seagate external hard drive without deleting the contents

how do i format my seagate 3TB external hard drive without deleting the contents, it is showing on my computer but when I try to open it says I need to format, but this will delete contents.

Sounds like you have an issue with the logic board. You will need to run data recover on it if you wish to get your data. You can attempt to do that first, but most likely you will have to format, then run the software. Being that you would do it immediately after you format, you should be able to recover most, if not all, of your data.
