,

I've had my i7920 a good long while now and although it's not completely ready to upgrade i thought i might want to send it out over this next year with an overclock.
I've heard these can push 4ghz + I'm not that ambitious but i would ideally like to try and see what i can do with the equipment i have. I've never overclocked before i should mention but gotta learn sometime right ?
So my questions are:

In order to overclock I'm obviously going to need something more powerful then a stock cooler what would you recommend to do this bearing in mind?
I don't really want to change my case I'm happy to spend money on a heat-sink up to £100/$159
ideally one that would work on a new build in the not to distant future but it's not essential
i've considered water cooling but im pretty sure i cant due to my case not having space with extensive modification which i don't want to do.

i've had a look at the Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator and Fan Quiet CPU Cooler
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/noctua-nh-d14-dual-radiator-x6-heat-pipe-quiet-cpu-cooler-with-2-x-fans is this any good ? pretty sure it would fit through my own research as i was concerned that my memory would get in the way but ive looked on their website and it says it's compatible.

Also is my current PSU and RAM up to the job?
would it be advisable to buy some new case fans? as mine are all still stock in the standard placements?

Any other missing information i haven't provided please ask and i will answer, thanks in advance!

This is my first time posting a question on there so sorry if I've posted in the wrong place or inadvertently broken any forum rules.

Varies on your need.
What I mean is how much are you willing to spend?

But for more airflow and better cooling for your case, I would go with Noctua.
Noctua
Kraken x40
You can get the x60 for 110, but you'd have to modify your case for it to fit, and it'll be the best cooling solution before custom loop for of now.

Your PSU and RAM are up for the job. Your motherboard should be fine as well.

The Noctua you selected is an excellent heatsink. Make sure it fits, install it, test it, and you'll be all ready to overclock.

The C stepped i7-920s generally aren't as good overclockers vs. the D stepped i7-920s. Some C stepped 920s do reach 4ghz, it'll depend on your chip. 3.5ghz is a good target and anything above that is gravy.

Read more than one guide on overclocking your chip before doing it. Here's a guide I've occasionally referenced for OCing the i7-920: http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

Go slow, don't get too crazy, and have fun!

I could get up to 3.7 on a C0 with a LOKI, see build pics in sig and CPU-Z validator, the 920 ocing guide above is good. A Hyper 212 EVO should do great for ocing, a NH-D14 is also a good option. I am also running 6GB (1333@1400) and my build is great for gaming. It would be great to change to a HAF 912 (For the same price as a D14, you could go 912 + Hyper 212 EVO) as well, plus, you cable management will be 9001 times better :p- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233

Overkill 101, an Antec 300 is way to small for an EX240, heck, my 500R would need modding to ft it. A Hyper 212 EVO and a HAF 912 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233 + http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099 is the best way to go, the Antec 300 would probably choke the airflow of the D14 anyways,...

True, but if he's willing to spend 150, he can go with the noctua and a new case. [And I have a mid tower with a single 140mm top fan. Customized it to fit the Kraken x60 in push/pull :D (External)]
Check this out.

Firstly thank you for your quick responses,
Seemed to be the consensus that the HAF 912 was a good choice so will look into that although I'm not major keen on a new case right now as only got the Antec 300 a few months back, but i will probably buy a new one in the next few coming weeks may even up the budget and go a little better (money permitting)
I'm going to get the Noctua for now fit it, give a trial and see how I get on.
i was thinking of maybe getting some 120mm intake fans for the front of my current case would this help at all?
Just till i upgrade the case in a few weeks, thanks for the benchmark table was unable to find this myself so cheers and thanks for the guide that will be the next step i hope (all going well)
Yeah my case at present is a bit of a mess I'd be the first to admit that i will do something about cable management when i order the new case.
With further research, my aim is to get to 3.5ghz but will be happy just to learn something along the way!

I would go for a 212 EVO or the Enermax linked and the HAF 912, you will get about the same or even better results with temp and the Antec with the terrible cable management will choke the D14 for airflow, which the C0 920 does not even need, by the time you need a D14, the OCability will already be tapped-out.

But it'll save him money in a sense if he'll upgrade his case in a couple weeks since he'll get a higher overclock capability without having to upgrade his cooler again.
Unlessd he decidesd to fgo for a custom loop and a case that'll support it. Of course it all depends on what he'd like to do and willing to do-and most of all, budget.
