Hi i just have a quick question that intel can't seem to answer correctly.

I have a pentium B960 and its a 35w cpu based on the sandybridge architecture. However it is a socket g2 and my question is, does that mean I can replace it with a 35w ivybridge processor? Also this cpu should be replaceable because apparently it does not come in a BGA soldered form.

Solution
possibly...something like a i5-3320M, for example, may work, as it is the same socket type and tdp. But mobile hardware is a different ballgame, and there are more things to consider (that in desktops are usually a given).

In order for a particular processor to be compatible with a particular laptop: (1) the processor must be physically compatible with the laptop socket, (2) the laptop chipset must support the processor, (3) the chipset front side bus speed must match the processor front side bus speed, (4) the laptop BIOS must support the processor.

If you hit all of those things you should be fine. You may need to do some serious digging to get this information though :)

well my chipset is a Intel HM65 Express. Would you be able to help me out or lead me in the right direction with finding the info on cpu support?

well asus told me they have no idea because that information is no longer available for my laptop since it is discontinued... im just going make sure all the bios updates are on my laptop and then exchange the b960 with a i5-2540M and hope for the best. its supported by the socket and chipset so by no means will the cpu cause any trouble other than just being incompatible with the bios correct? Also my laptop X54C has a K54C motherboard and there a a lot of different models using this motherboard so i'm thinking the cpu support may be pretty broad.

I have both the Asus x54c-rb93 and the x54c-bbk9. They have identical motherboards (aside from the bbk9 having an extra 2GB ram onboard). I have upgraded the bbk9 from the stock Pentium B960 to the i5 2450M, then again from the i5 2450M to the i7 2670qm. No issues at all.
