I'm looking to build a new system.

Key things that I want to do
  • ■ Be able to run multiple OS either through multiple boot drives or as a virtual box.
    ■ Run windows for the family and Linux for me to play with and learn on.
    ■ Used for home office applications, web surfing, video / audio and children's educational programs and games.
Looking for enough processor speed and memory to allow for these things but a a price that won't put me in the dog house with the wife. I also would definitely like to be able to run two or more monitors.

Any advice or guidance will be appreciated.
Thanks

This is a bit higher than what you suggested and may even be overkill, but I'm guessing if you want dual monitors you'll be doing some gaming. If you need to cut costs and aren't planning on overclocking, you can also drop the water cooler to reduce the cost by $25. I also selected the 6350, but for about $20 more you could step up to the 8320 chip. I went with AMD over intel due to your budget. The GPU should allow you to run dual monitors. Obviously, the price here wouldn't include a monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse, speakers, or additional fans but then again I don't know your situation, you may be able to scavenge these parts off another PC and then eventually add upgraded components a little at a time.

The starting point would be your budget. There are plenty of ways to design a system that meets your needs but knowing what would put you in the doghouse with your wife is a possibly a lot different than what would put me in the doghouse with mine.
