Can I Convert Two 4pin Molex Connectors to 6pin PCIe to power AMD HD7870

Hi all,

I bought AMD HD 7870 and found out it needs 2 6pin- PCI/e power wires to drive it. However, my 550w psu only has one 6pin PCI/e wire. But the psu does have one extra wire with 2 4pin Molex Connectors. And it also provides a 2x4pin to 6pin PCI/e adapter wire. I want to use that extra power wire as the additional 6pin PCI/e wire, but I also heard there might be current and voltage issues. So can anyone give me some advice according to my desktop specs?

Specs:
Graphics: AMD HD 7870 by HIS
CPU: i3-3225
RAM: Corsair 2x4GB
MB: Asrock Z75 pro
PSU: Logisys BLACK 550W 120MM BALL BEARING FAN PSU

Thank you all!

  1. Yeah are you talking about an adapter like this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812887001
  2. if you have too use a molex y cable and use the adaptor. but before you do that look to see if your power supply has one rail or two. if it one rail check that the wattage on the one rail will handle the gpu and cpu wattages. if the power supply is two rail unit then it may not be able to run the new gpu do to the amps being split on the 12v rail.

    yeah, it's this one
  4. So as long as your PSU can handle your system then you can use this

Thank you for the reply. But how do I identify if the psu is one rail or two?

Looking at the specifications found here: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PS550E12BK

It seems to have a single 12V rail
    If this is your PSU
