I have a 320gb Western digital scorpio blue and want to use it in my new pc build. I want to wipe it and install windows 8 from the system builder disk. Will this work? What will happen when I boot up my pc for the first time with this hard drive in because it has windows xp previously installed from a laptop. thanks in advance.
My pc is a msi b75 motherboard
intel i3 3220
4gb ram
r9 270x gpu

Oh.
No problem.
Put the Win8 DVD in the drive, boot from it.
Near the beginning of the install, you're given the opportunity to delete any and all existing partitions.
Then proceed with the install.

Check that the DVD drive is first in the boot sequence.
Put the disk in.
It should say "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD..."
Press any key.
Off you go.

If it doesn't, F12 should give you a menu on what to boot from.
But the above steps should work.

Okay and this will be my first build so when I turn the computer on for the first time it will be at a parts and setup page right?

Install Windows. See where it takes you.
Drivers and such, beyond the basic ones that Windows installs to make it work, will have to be installed by you. It 'may' find better ones than the basic, but I always recommend to gather all the newest drivers from the manufacturers websites firs, and put them on a USB stick. Especially the LAN driver.
