After attempting to update Win 7 Pro (Oct 15, 2013), my ASUS A53U laptop failed to update on restart at the 30% point (froze). After hard booting it 30 minutes later, Windows failed to start part-way. Regardless of which "Safe" booting option I choose it eventually locked into a perpetual System Restore/System Repair loop (i.e., 3rd cirlce of windows hell--inSecurity Update). I noticed that it does seem to "hang" for a long time on an AVG file (avgidsha.sys). I tried using AVG's rescue USB stick, but it just slides back into 3rd circle symptoms.

Please help with any advice (no, I never got around to making an ASUS restore partition--not sure if it would've helped) before I slide down to circle 9--BSOD and smoke and flames and brimstone.

No ASUS restore partition. Used my install disk to make a mini-partition of Win7 (no ASUS drivers, etc.) to transfer what of my data I can locate--there's a lot. I don't know how to restore to the original ASUS Windows install, much less without destroying my data.

P.S.: I think the answer to my last question is: apparently, not so far.

To be continued...
