Hi guys. Ive been having issues with my computer for over a year and i just attributed it to bugs. I had quite a bit of stuff on it , games , class work, pics ect. But ive been poking around and my cpu is running at 98c....so basically im overheating my cpu. This is a rig i built a ittle over a year ago. Ill get back to you guys with specs when i get home. What are some things i can do to solve this issue?

Clean any dust out of your case and it's fans. Reapply the thermal paste on your processor's heatsink.

How much thermal paste should i apply? I blew out the case the other day...it was nasty.

Which processor do you have, some require a little more others a little less. But usually a rice sized method in the centre works fine and is the simplest.

edit: When you remove the heat sink make sure to use an alcohol like isopropyl to clean all the old thermal paste off. Using qtips and coffee filters is how i clean them. Also make sure the alcohol is above 70% to remove most of the impurities. I use isopropyl 99%. If you don't have it you can grab it from your walmart or grocery store, 500ml is about $5.

most squeeze about a rice grain sized amount of paste onto the center of the cpu and then use the pressure of the heatsink to spread the paste. depending on your cpu you may need a little more/less paste.

I should probably give you more information as to what is happening with the rig. sometimes after about a half hour everything freezes and my monitor goes into sleep mode. Im assuming this is some sort of safety built into the processor/mb. I should mention that this isnt during gaming sessions. This is during surfing the net or even more annoying...during typing reports. The computer hasnt been under any real high loads in a while as i havent had a ton of time for gaming. I will be playing Battlefield 4 on this rig though. If i can get this issue solved anyways
