external hard drive file directory corrupted unreadable

Hello, I have Toshiba external HD, but to my surprise this evening I could not open it, it only display this message "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" please your assistance is highly appreciated all my years work is in there.

Is Windows reading the drive as present (does it show up in the My Computer screen)
