R9 280X Crossfire Problem (7970 rebrand cards)

Hi, im getting low gpu usage with my new cards.

Specs are i7 2600k @4ghz currently
16gb ddr3 1600mhz
and the crossfire cards with a 700 watt psu..

I just got these cards, and i tried testing them and in games like just cause im getting gpu usage of around 30% each card in the concrete jungle benchmark and with a single card physically inside the usage is around 90+% so i get better performance on one card.. In some benchmarks like unreal heaven my usage is both pretty high but not 100% all the time. At different parts it varies between 60-100%.

I upgraded from 560tis sli which worked absolutely perfectly and ran everything 100% usage and got me awesome frames. I tested the games i play like warframe and blacklight retribution on the 280x and was sad to see 560ti sli beating the fps by like 20+ -_-

Is it my power supply? I tried it with only one in on heaven and it was 90% so its my only idea :/

Before you say reinstall drivers etc, i have reinstalled windows twice and done driver clean things etc hundreds of times.. I have been trying for 2 days now. Although! there is only one BETA driver that support these cards as they just came out.. (i know its a rebrand 7970) so could it be the drivers just a bit bad till the next whql?

Also i have tried the disable ULPS the re enable crossfire, try different bridge cable, try different connector, try different pci slot, Everything!! It must be my power right? Dont know what to do :/ Really need help!

There have been crossfire issues with the 13-9 driver. I would recommend installing the 13-10 beta driver. Apparently that is supposed to fix all the Crossfire problems. The 13-9 driver apparently was forcing the secondary card to run at x4 instead of the native x16. When you select drivers this time, pretend that you have 2 HD 7970s and install the 13-10. I do believe that the R9 drivers have something to do with TrueAudio so that may be the problem as well.

700 watts is a bit on the low side for your high-end overclocked system. The new AMD cards use even more power than their rebrand predecessors.

Just curious, what made you decide that Crossfire would be a better option than SLI?

Ive tried the 13.9 driver the 13.10 driver and the 13.11 driver ;( no difference! Also How do i make it think its a 7970?

And replying to 17 seconds yeah i thought 700 is a bit on the low side but i still do get 99% usage on heaven! idk! And also i just thought since they were cheaper than nvidia i would do crossfire 280x with a 9800gt for physx... I have never use amd for gaming before i was just hoping it would have no problems, but my 560tis DID have a low gpu usage issue when i got them but it was 2 years ago and i cant remember what i did to solve it! mabye it was just the drivers, they still are beta.. hmmm hopefully a fixed whql comes out soon.

Im buying a new psu and going to test out hybrid physX soon so ill see how it goes when a new driver comes out and that

I'm having the same issue. 2 MSI Twin Frozr R9 280x in CF. With Unigine Heaven running (the only benchmark I've tried so far), GPU1 gets 98% usage and GPU2 stays at 0. Crossifre is enabled, according to GPU-Z and CCC. I am running on a 1000w PSU. I'm installing the 13.11 beta driver, we will see what happens.

I dont think the power supply would relay into real world performance. If there wasnt enough power the card would just shut down or refuse to power on in the first place.

I'm guessing Unigine Heaven was the problem. Unigine Valley utilizes the 2nd GPU where Heaven did not.

Did you try to disable it?

Cus i had the same problem with the gigabyte 280x in cfx and disabling it helped utilizing both GPU's.

No, I didn't try. I'll remember that if I ever have any problems with anything else, but as it is, Heaven was the only thing really giving me problems. Everything works fine on Valley. I've played Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4, and everything works fine with those as well. No point going through all that for me just to get Heaven to work.

Btw, I'm pretty sure you can disable that through CCC instead of having to scroll through your registry
