Hey, me and my dad is looking for a new gaming rig. Since we already have a pretty decent gaming pc we'll stick with a rig for about $900. So we're not looking for a beast computer.
My dad have come up with a rig and we just wanted to get it checked before continuing. We already have a 400watt PSU and a cabinet.
Here's the current rig:

ASUS M5A99 FX PRO R2.0 Motherboard
AMD FX-6300 Black AM3
Corsair Vengeance Bk DDR3 1866 8GB
Seagate Desktop ssHD-2TB HDD
ASUS GeForce GTX 660 OC - 2GB GDDR5

This costs about $843 here in Denmark.
The processor has 6 cores wouldn't it be better with less cores when most games run about 2 cores?
But tell me what you think about the rig, will it be able to run newer and upcoming games with high graphics and decent fps?

The processor is good enough, can give you a good stable OC in future (if you want to).
The rig is good enough to play most of the games except the very intense GPU demanding games such as BF4 etc with high settings without a lag.
For that you need, either an SLI with another 660, or a a better GPU like the 7970, GTX 760.
And if you plan an SLI, a decent 600watt PSU (XFX) is required.
Also get a SSD, just for the OS (64GB is enough).

More newer games are utilizing more cores. The console market is accelerating this trend because of the low clock speeds and 8 physical cores on the upcoming consoles. Considering the future of gaming, I would say stick with more cores. If you can get an 8350 for a reasonable price, I'd do it. A 660 is a great card. Make sure you get 2x4GB if you're going with 8GB so you can take advantage of the dual-channel memory bandwidth.

Are you using a 1080p monitor with this system?

I'm just not sure about pricing in Denmark to give you enough of a suggestion, but the info I've provided should give you a degree of guidance.

Everyone with the "required 8 core" comments, are cracking me up. You can run BF4 on ultra with no hiccups at all with a i5 and a 670 gtx with 8gb of ram. I have a 670 with an i7 and my computer laughs at bf4. It is not as demanding as most people think it is.

All right, I removed the processor and graphic card and added your two suggestions which ends up in $984. My dad is okay with this price, but not sure if we're going with it right away though. With this rig I'll probably need more power on my PSU right?

I sure love the speed of a SSD, though the cheapest 64GB HDD in Denmark is about $100. The HDD we choose is a combination of a normal harddisk with SSD. The SLI version is about $17 cheaper than the GTX 760 OC wouldn't that be better to pick then?

Interesting, maybe I should go with a FX-8320 8 core then. Also we will use 1080p monitors with this system.
But will it be more optimal using a Intel Core with this system?

Thanks for your quick answering!

A pair of GTX 660 is much faster than a 760 and close to a 780.
So go ahead and get the SLI.

the gtx 660 is at 160-180, right?

Well the prices is a bit screwed up here in Denmark so the GTX 660 OC is at $247 and a GTX 760 OC is at $338 so yes $91 difference.

So the GTX 660 Ti is $320 should I choose that over a GTX 760 OC which is just $338.

Though if I do upgrade to a FX-8320 processor and a GTX 660 OC/Ti I should probably change my current 400watt PSU with a 600watt right?
