Best bet is to just try it and see how you like the performance. You realize you will end up with 2TB of storage with a RAID6 right? if you use RAID5 you will have 3TB of storage.
It is recommended that you use the same make/model, but it can be done with the same size & speed drives. When drives aren't the same make/model, there is the possibility of performance degradation.
Like for example, I have 4 Seagate Constellation 1 TB drives and 2 are identical and the other 2 are different. Would they be close enough to not cause performance degradation? BTW they are all 7200 RPM SATA 3

I think I am going with RAID 5 now because of the only 50 percent storage on RAID 6 and also one of the hard drives is making strange noises so I don't know how long it is going to last. Thanks again!
