Expected price drops in the very near future?

I like many others were/are hoping to see a price drop with the introduction of AMD's R-series. Unfortunately that hasn't seemed to happen yet. Nvidia announced a price drop "some time in November".

I'm currently without a dedicated gpu. I've pretty much made up my mind I'm getting a 7950. Putting aside the typical "my crystal ball says...", what do people speculate price drops to be if any at this point? Is it even possible to see the 7950 go much lower than the typical $180-$200 after rebates?

Solution
It really depends on how long you want to wait. One thing that AMD likes to do is game bundles with their supplanted GPU series, so you may be able to find a nice value in that manner.

I would expect that there will be a few nice sales before Christmas and, of course, "Black Friday" always has a few surprises. Your best bet may be to pick out a few comparable cards (and bundles) and use a website that has price alerts to find the best deal.

I don't think anyone outside of AMD can really give an accurate answer on pricing until it's leaked to 3rd party sites. Just keep your ear open and be patient if you want to find the best possible deal :)

My patience is wearing thin, especially trying to game using HD4000 integrated! This is the last item for my freshly built pc so I'm very excited and understandably impatient to get a card in there to start gaming at a high level! I should've noted as well this is my first gaming pc and I have a number of games I've already purchased on Steam ready to play. I tried playing Risen after getting everything built and it's not even playable on standard settings currently!

I would watch prices on AMD for their 7000 series. With the somewhat new chips the will try to sell the older cards at a bit of a lower price point. I would pick up a 7970 if I was going with AMD. Asus's DirectCU II cooling is great and ads life to the card as far as I have seen. I don't honestly see much of a price drop with Nvidia happening until they release a new chip-set for the GPU's.

Well, in the short term, my guess would be that AMD isn't going to do much in terms of price adjustments until there is a true replacement for that card. The new GPUs straddle that particular model in performance (The 280x being faster, the 270x being slower and less powerful overall), meaning it's still considered a current model.

That said, any price drops would most likely be in the 10-15% range ($20-30), when it does happen. While no price-point is a guarantee, you may have to be willing to sacrifice a little money to get the card you want now.

I certainly understand not wanting to using an on-board for long. Hope you find the card you want :)

AMD Said they will be offering that option with those cards later on. I think in this case if you want the games go with the 7950, but if not go with the 270x. It in my opinion is the better of the 2 cards.

GPU price/performance is competitive at every price level except for the very top level.
You will get what you pay for. Or, at least so close that you can't tell the difference without a synthetic benchmark.

If you have a need now, go ahead and buy now.

Buy the best graphics card your budget and psu will allow. A 7950 is a fine card, a GTX760 would be an alternately good card.
My perception is that amd will run synthetic FPS benchmarks higher.
Nvidia tends to run with less lagging.
Most like the nvidia drivers better.

I think the 270x is more comparable to the 7870. Based on the reviews I've seen though, there isn't a huge difference in performance between the 270x and the 7950.

The 7950 has the faster memory bus and 3gb of ram (vs. the 2gb of the 270x), as well as 1792 stream processors (vs. 1280). With the R9 270x, you're getting faster processor and memory speed.

Basically, the 7950 is going to favor better performance in 1080p (and higher) gaming. This is my opinion based on the products specifications and the reviews I've read.

I agree that you should keep Nvidia in mind. They offer some great features like PhysX and GeForce Experience, as well as terrific driver support.

GeForce Experience in particular is outstanding for casual gamers, it determines the best settings in games based on your system and makes keeping current with drivers a breeze.

Everyone has their preference on brand, and I think the GTX760 is at a higher pricepoint, but don't rule out Nvidia's products. They are F'n awesome imo!

Don't bet on seeing any significant price drops for the 7xxx series-a few dollars but not too much. It's far more likely Nvidia will drop their prices, good as their cards are more than a few seem to be questioning if they are worth the price premium, and that game bundle for the 7xxx cards can be a real tie breaker.
Get the card you want that is within your budget and don't beat yourself up if it's $20 cheaper next week, mate, "there's always a better deal tomorrow and the best thing ever is just around the corner". should be the PC gamers mantra (in my opinion).
HD7950: cheaper than GTX760, free games.
GTX760: The above goodies, smoother gameplay and lower power consumption which usually means a cooler or quieter running card- particularly on the reference design, something AMD failed to achieve with their 7xxx and below cards.
Without benchmarking, you'll not spot the performance difference.
So: Free games, less cash or a smoother and, perhaps slightly less annoying overall experience? You choice, Neo.

I agree with you for the most part, but I do think the 7000 series will go down a bit, but I don't mean by much. and you are very right on the ever changing prices. For budget I would go with the 7970 or 7860. But if you want something a little better go with the 280 or 270. Nvidia has great cards as well and you will be fine if you pick the 760 or 770. At this point it is all up to you and what you believe is right.

I ended up going with the XFX Double D HD 7950. I was going to get the Sapphire, but I forgot my case will not fit the cards bigger than 10.5". After some haggling I was able to pay $184 + $30 MIR bringing the total down to $154 which makes me very happy.

I've read the XFX tend to run a little warmer, but I'm hoping my 5 case fans will help with that. I'm wishing I got a better PSU than the OCZ modXtream 600. I guess I know what my first upgrade will be!

Grats man, glad you got a great deal :D

600W PSU should be fine for that card with a typical hardware setup and peripherals.

Have fun!!!

@ Kalmado: If you're still tracking this thread:
You've plenty of power, unless you're going to heavily overclock.
Not that long ago I thought I got a great deal on the same card-for£210 UK!.
See what I meant about the prices?
Tip: older games can run at insane speeds, either cap the frame rate with Radeonpro or turn Vsync on to quieten things down.
Enjoy! :)
