Yes. I wouldn't do any major browsing until you get antivirus though.

Unless you are going to click on every advertisment you see or the YOU ARE THE WINNER banners, you are gonna be fine.
But if you have your doubts, download the antivirus first and the do the other downloads you want to do. Avast is free and top of the line antivirus if you dont already have one on disc or something.

it is never safe to surf the internet without an antivirus program of some sort. There are some really good FREE antivirus programs out there so I suggest you get one before you do anything else. I use AVAST! basic download antivirus, but look at other programs so you can find one to suit you. After you download the antivirus THEN go and get your updates.

Assuming you are running genuine windows, Microsoft Security Essentials is free and extremely lightweight. This is what I run for personal use and I have had no issues.
