When is a CPU outdated?

Hey community, I was looking for a thread and could not seem to find my answer. My question is when is "old" old? (or outdated). Most of if not all of my rig is up to date (gtx680/8gb veng.ram/ssd) however, my CPU I've been running for awhile now. It is a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE, not overclocked anymore but can put it back to check if its a big difference but I've had this cpu since its launch, a few of the posts topics about this CPU are both "keep and oc" or "upgrade to XXXX". I am a student in graphics design so I use alot of adobe programs and video editing/photoshop. I do also game alot (MMO's/FPS/RTS) and when playing BF4 beta I got some bad fps on mid-settings (although I know its a beta), which was abit frustrating. So is a cpu/mobo upgrade viable at this point or should I just bite the bullet and wait?

Solution
Hi. I agree. As long as it is working for you, no need to change. I gave my sister one of mt Desktops running a Pentium D and it is doing fine. The bad FPS in BF 4 can be expected. After all it is a Beta and probably no where close to being optimized.

I always say, your CPU is "outdated" when it doesn't perform the functions that you need it to. Also if your CPU is the bottleneck in your system that may be a good indication that it is getting outdated.

Your hardware is outdated when you decide it no longer meets your expectations or if you want more / better performance. That could be today, tomorrow, or sometime in the future...

My Q9450 will turn 6 years old in Q1 2014. My Radeon HD 5850 has recently turned 4 years old. It have not upgrade since they still provide me with adequate performance.

I will likely upgrade to Haswell so that I can get faster video encoding times for those few instances per month when I do encode. I have yet to decide if I am going to upgrade the Radeon HD 5850.

This^ You have to decide when you need to upgrade. Don't let the tech world decide for you!!

Thanks for the helpful replies, I figure I can hold onto it for abit longer, I guess I have an itch to upgrade as always but I will continue to look into it myself. I don't mind waiting either too much for the next step of cpu's.
