I have an HP computer. It has Windows 7 home premium OEM. The HD has to many bad sectors to fix but I can recover many of the files like pics and docs. If I replace the HD can I install windows 7 or 8 and use the computer.

Thanks

heh...depends on who you talk to. Honestly i HATE it. If they brought back the actual start menu then i would be good. The only reason why I would ever use windows 8 is if i needed Direct X 11.2 for gaming which my Video card is only a DX 10 card so as of right now no need for it. There are a few work around to get windows 8 working like windows 7 but all the good ones you have to pay for.
Yes but you will either need to buy a new copy (Especially if its windows 8 you have to) or you need an OEM Install DVD for the Key thats on your PC to work. I would get a hold of HP and let them know whats up and see if they can ship you a Install CD.

Well unfortunately I can not go the Control panel route and BU because the HD will no longer run in the machine. If I put it in a hard drive enclosure I can read most of the files. There are some that must be in the bad sectors that can not be read though.

drtweak I will do that and recover the stuff I can as far as data. I have the licience so I can use 7 if I want. It is a four year old computer and I was wondering if I can install a fresh copy of 8. Is it an improvement on 7.
