Hard Drive Making Whirring/Grinding Noise on Boot

In the last few days, every time I boot my PC, my hard drive (WD 1TB Caviar Black) makes a loud whirring/grinding sound. This noise only lasts from the 'starting windows' screen until my computer has booted and the background programs have all loaded. I've used WD's LifeGuard Diagnostic tool to do both a quick and extended scan, which came back with no problems. I'm worried that every time I boot, I could be doing the hard drive damage! I'd like to know what this problem potentially is and how to go about it!
Thanks!

Not trying to say you didn't already check this but are you sure its not a fan a dvd drive causing this sound?

In any case I would check the smart data and I suppose run a chkdsk on the drive at the very least.

I'd see about getting it replaced via warranty even though lifeguard says its fine. Grinding noises aren't good to say the least.

I did take the side panel off to try and locate the sound and I'm sure it's coming from the hard drive! I'll power my machine down, unplug the hard drive and turn it on without just to be sure though.

LifeGuard tool shows 'PASS' next to the SMART status! I'll run a chkdsk now though!

Thanks for your reply!

So it is definitely the hard drive making the noise.

Chkdsk didn't return any problems or fix anything so I'm going to get into contact with WD to get it replaced!

Thanks again.
