I'm planning on using an i7-4930k on a X79 deluxe but I have read that you need to get a Bios update on some motherboards? Is this true and would the motherboard need to be updated?

The CPU does require a BIOS update (depending on the motherboard manufacture date), but the board features the Flashback, so that you can flash the BIOS even if the CPU is not supported.
And if something goes wrong, you can replace the BIOS chip with a new one, since the chip is on socket.

So it isn't that big of a deal to do a BIOS flashback? But I read on the Asus website that you are responsibile or something if it stuffs up?! Also how exspensive and hard is it to replace the BIOS chip?

The new X79 Deluxe ships with Iey-E ready UEFI. USB BIOS Flashback is quite simple to use. The board will POST, you can then update to the latest UEFI at your leisure or as needed.

As Raja said, BIOS Flashback is very easy ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADcdnwMjd_I ).
However, supposing that something goes wrong, a BIOS chip is about 15-20$.
For replacing it, here's an example:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLEQoWRq41k
When receiving the board, check the barcode sticker on the motherboard:

The last 4 digits (0503 in the picture) stand for the board's BIOS version.

Just one last question what BIOS version does it have to be to support the new Ivy Bridge E chips?

0401. Now that I've looked better, I realise that the CPU is supported with no BIOS update needed. So, nothing to worry about:

Sorry for misleading you in the first post. I've probably checked a different ASUS board.

I have the same question. I got the mobo on Monday and am waiting for the cooler to install the 4930k and give it a go. However, there's no sticker on the mobo or the box that shows the BIOS verision as it is apparently the case with some mobos. I found no sticker on my board.

CPU support tab on ASUS page for the motherboard says i7 4930k will work with BIOS 0401 and the earliest version of BIOS listed under the Drivers & Tools is 0401. Does that mean the board will POST with the CPU and I don't need to flash the BIOS thingy? Considering the risks I'd rather not do that. I know it sounds stupid but could the lack of any sticker or any indication as to the BIOS version mean the BIOS chip is blank and I DO need to flash it? Would they ship boards with no BIOS installed?! I looked at the board below the model name and the revison number for the board is 1.01.

No need to worry. The CPU should work. The BIOS is there. Just install the components and test.
