Ok its upgrade time for our LAN partys!

More Members more internet hungry computers and not enough Ethernet ports to go round. Our solution (I think) is to get a network switch. We need advice to get the best one and how to use it most effectively. Our Budget is up to £50 (£30-£40 best).

We need at least 16 Ports and simple plug and play connection. I would prefer to run one switch because of latency problems with two.

I picked out this one from Ebuyer : http://www.ebuyer.com/281745-tp-link-24-port-10-100-rackmount-unamanged-switch-tl-sf1024d

One Question: for that style of network hub there is no dedicated "WAN Input/ Internet connection port" Can we just plug a cat 5 from the modem to one of the 24 ports and then every other computer connected will get internet?

One other Question: Found a better one? Tell me!

One More Question: Have I done something completely wrong and should be using a strange contraption I have not heard of before?

P.S. Thank you for any help/guidance on this topic

Almost..:)

ISP -> Modem -> router -> switch -> devices

The modem and router may be the same box. Many are.
If there is only one port on it, it is just a Modem. If it has 4 or more, it is almost assuredly a modem+router.

In the second case, wire from a LAN port on the router to a port on the switch. Other devices in other ports on the switch.

You need a router in between the modem and the switch.
Sometimes the modem and router are in the same box.

On the back of your 'modem' device, how many ports are there (and what make/model is it)?

I will need to find out the make/Model tomorrow because the next host is not me but I would expect he has a Modem built into his home setup. So just to clarify: WAN -> Router -> Modem -> any port on Switch -> Workstations?
