Hi guys, let me start by stating my build.

ASRock 790 extreme 3
FX8350 w/ Evo 212 cooler
HD7970
12GB RAM
1SSD 1 HDD
New Corsair TX850W

OK so I recently bought a 7970 so upgraded my PSU from a TX 650 to a TX850. It did work on the 650 and i know 850 is a bit too much but i got it incase i wanted to crossfire anytime and the 650 was kicking out a lot of heat under load. I also have 5 case fans so ya know.

Anyway, earlier tonight I put in my 850 PSU. But since using my computer I've noticed a loud noise coming from inside whenever the CPU is under more than 5% load. It is not a high pitched electrical noise. I have experienced this before. This is a more low pinched noise, sounds a little like the old Amstrad loading noises. I'm currently in power saving mode as the noise is the quietest in this mode and only kicks in when something is loading. In balance and defiantly in high performance the noise becomes more constant. I just played Sleeping Dogs for about half an hour and after it loaded the noise went away during game play. The noise is coming from around the CPU area, it is NOT the PSU making the noise. However its hard to get my ear close to the motherboard as the heatsink on the EVO is pretty big.

Is it possible my motherboard is not comparable with this PSU? Or that I have knocked the heatsink and somehow dislodged the CPU? (performance or heat have not been affected) I am monitoring the performance in task manager and when in power saving mode the noise only kicks in when something is under load. And again, it is NOT the high pitched electrical noise.

Thanks in advance for your time guys. Kind worried about this as I've never heard this noise before the change in PSU.

Hi man, it is not the fan. 100% not the fan. I can get my ear right up to the fan as the heatsink is big and the noise is coming more from behind it on the motherboard level

If i get chance when I wake up I will record the noise. it's deinatly not a fan, and the hard drive is in the front of the case, the noise coming from the center area around the CPU / RAM area. Is is not possible a knocked CPU could make the noise? just wondering as I may have knocked the heatsink, but it is screwed on very tightly and performance has not been effected. Thanks again

The heatsink is anchored pretty well and should not come loose from a rap or whatever. You might want to check the screws on the Motherbaord and make sure they are tight, as the Motherboard could be Vibrating against the Standoffs for the Fan on the CPU.

Coastie it is NOT the fan in any way shape or form. I have had my ear right next to the fan as the noise is happening and I can tell 100% the noise is coming from the mother board level

UPADATE:

Ok so i have swapped back to my 65 without taking the 850 out f the case. The noise has GONE! (only now there is a new noise as my 650 fan is very squeaky, another reason I needed to upgrade)

I am currently in High performance mode and before the noise was constant in this mode, now there is no sound whatever mode I am in. Is it possible the 850 is letting too much power into the motherboard? Or that my Motherboard does not support the specific make / model? Or that the PSU is faulty (no noise from the new PSU) and giving too much power? I'm really at a loss with this 1. might try plugging the 850 back in and seeing if it was a loose connection making the noise before

With the 850 plugged in, the noise was coming from around the 8pin power connector area. with my 650 I am using 2x4 pin plugs to power, plus the 24pin. just trying to give as much info as possile

That 8 pin connector is for the CPU. Anyway, the PSU is essentially a Transformer. Instead of boosting Voltage, it reduces the Voltage from 120v or 220v ( depending on the standard of the country ) to what is needed by the various components. Could be Coil hum i the PSU or somethng of that nature. Best to probably just RMA it and get another one.

Yeah ive ordered a tx750 hoping the cable is split into 2x4 pins instead of 1 8pin. although the board can handle 8 pin so i dont know what it's problem might be. Surely now with my 650 i am running the same amount of power into the CPU with my 2x4pin?

reason i went for the 850 over the 750 was cus it was actually CHEAPER. but we'll see when this next 1 arrives. for now ill stick with my whiney 650 :) thanks guys, ill keep you updated as to the 750

well fingers crossed the next 1 works out. But i know it was not coil hum of any sort, my 650 has coil hum so i have a good reference. This was LOUD, and sounded very damaging. The noise was not high pitched as i said before. anyway ill post back when my new 1 arrives. fingers crossed, this is the last part of my build...so close!

Update:
I just bought a Corsair GS700W and no problems what so ever. NO NOISE! :) Gets a little hot under full load with the 7970 which i dont like, but the PSU is great, fan even goes off when it's not needed. It was JUST that Corsair TX850W that was the problem. Incompatibility maybe?
