I am running an i5-4670K and a Asus Maximus VI Gene motherboard. Appears the chip has an onboard sound driver as well as the motherboard.

Assuming the following are both true:
a - The Asus onboard sound is better than the Intel
b - The Asus onboard sound can be directed to feed through the onboard HDMI port (will need to look into this, but guessing its a BIOS setting)

Would it be better to run the sound through the Optical or through the HDMI? The computer is running XBMC and feeds directly into my sound receiver.

Thanks!

Optical and hdmi sound the same, but hdmi can support 7.1 channels opposed to optical's 5.1 channels. I use optical from my motherboard to my receiver since it's older and doesn't have hdmi for a 2.0 set up with my old home theatre speakers. Use whichever makes cable management easier or hdmi if you need 7.1 channels.
