When I go to load Battlefield 3, the 2nd gpu spins up and is clearly being used but;
When I minimize to look at catalyst control centers gpu stats it says the gpu clock is at 300mhz and the memory clock is at 150mhz.

This is odd because I used this program to run both 7970's @ 1150mhz.

Case: Corsair 750d
Processor: AMD FX 8320 @ 4.5ghz
Cooler: Corsair h100i
Motherboard: Crosshair v formula z
ram: corsair dominator platinum 2133mh 8gb
gpu1:gigabyte 7970 ghz edition
gpu2: msi 2pmd3gd5

I also have the power to both cards set to +10 in catalyst control center.

current beta drivers. (I used 13.10 also, but get better performance with the beta getting around 120fps in battlefield 3).

I read somewhere that the 2nd gpu is only fully utilized when in full screen mode, (while gaming), but when I alt-tab to control center it still reads 300mhz on the core clock and 150mhz memory clock).

PC sensors are notoriously unreliable. You should pay attention to the performance. If it was truly running at 300Mhz while playing BF3 it would be stuttering like mad. Compare it with crossfire on and off.

To me, it sounds like everything is working fine. You will not be able to exit the application to see what the second gpu is doing. When you do that it goes idle. There are a couple ways you can tell though. One is to get a second monitor(even if just borrowing a tv for a few minutes to hook up) to put CCC on one monitor and then play on the other. The second and more simple one is to play BF3 for a while(20 minutes maybe) and then exit and compare the temps of card one to the temps of card 2. If both are approximately the same then they were both working. If one is significantly more than the second, then you have an issue. I would try that and report back after.

Thanks for all the quick replys; I will take czars advice and try the second monitor.
Will reply after

Ok, so everything is functioning properly...I think.
My core/memory clock both jump to the appropriate place - on both cards.
However, the second gpu shows to be around 45% usage...
the game runs perfectly though.
And both gpu's heat up the way they should.
