I'm wondering if my psu is fine for xfiring 280x. The msi one says it needs at least an 1000W psu and I used the asus psu calculator and it gave me 1100W. I think that's all strange though but the gpus I want to get are the asus R9-280x ones.

yes you would even get away with an 850w psu. However, what you have is optimal, since it allows for a some headroom, and doesn't stress out your psu too much.

You could get away with a 650w PSU, 850w will give you all the OC headroom you could ask for.
