Hi,
I am currently using a HP Laserjet M1136/M1130 printer at my office, where we have a mix of 6 computers installed with either Windows XP or Windows 7. 2 computers are laptops running Windows 7 and 4 computers are 3 desktops/1 laptop running Windows XP.

I have had the same model printer for over 2 years, it recently got spoilt, due to which I bought an exact same model printer again. While installing on the Windows XP machine, Smart Install started automatically on connecting the USB, and started to install the software, after going through the works it eventually ended at a window, which said USB Printer install failed (may not be the exact wordings), it gave me 3 steps, 1. Turn off the printer, 2. Disconnect the USB, and 3. Reconnect and switch on. This process yielded the same result.

I downloaded the software from the HP website again and installed the printer software/driver, and at some point, it would ask me connect the printer via USB, saying "Waiting for device to be connected now...", after connecting the status would change to installing the connected device.. , which would eventually keep going on even though the printer was connected.

After having tried installing on various XP machines I eventually tried on the 2 Windows 7 laptop, and it was successful on both of them, I was able to scan/print etc.

During troubleshooting, what I did notice was that in My Computer (for all the XP machines), the scanner would show up as installed, and even after the initial failed driver installation, I was allowed to scan a document successfully, but no printer would show in the Printer and Faxes window.

Anyone experiencing the same issue on this or a different HP modelled MFP printer, and could shed some light???

Solution
i had that error on other pc before. it because there already was hp printer driver software on the pc. the quick and dirty fix is go under printers..click add and with the printer driver cd or the expanded printer drivers in a folder point windows to them and let windows install the printer that way. if the drivers lock up....boot into safe mode uninstall all of the hp software for every printer then reboot and try again. if it crashes again use hp printer driver remover tool.
